Distractions
Irrelevant conversations in OR leading to distraction of Surgeon and pollution of OR with ambient noise
Evidence it’s a Problem:
Per recent studies (1,2,3,4) distractions in the OR are driven in large part by ambient noise, opening of the operating room door and irrelevant and distracting conversation. Particularly, irrelevant conversation is a known driver of surgeon distraction and External Staff (such as a medical device rep) are large drivers of irrelevant conversations. Acoustic Distractions are associated with higher rates of stress among surgeons and poorer team performance. Further, increased rates of distractions lead to prolonged surgical times which increase operating costs for hospitals.
